Earn More From Every Eligible Marriott Stay

Whether you’re traveling for a week, a month, or a six-month government assignment, Marriott Bonvoy is one of the most valuable hotel loyalty programs available.

When you stay at participating Marriott hotels through Per Diem Lodging, you can often earn Marriott Bonvoy points, Elite Night Credits, and work toward elite status—all while staying within government per diem rates.

Whether your goal is complimentary hotel nights, suite upgrades, free breakfast, or Platinum Elite status, Marriott Bonvoy rewards long-term travelers exceptionally well.

Why Government Travelers Should Join Marriott Bonvoy

Government and military travelers often stay far more nights each year than the average vacation traveler.

That makes Marriott Bonvoy especially valuable because every eligible stay helps you earn:

  • Marriott Bonvoy Points
  • Elite Night Credits
  • Elite Status
  • Free hotel nights
  • Premium travel benefits

Many Per Diem Lodging guests earn enough nights during a single stay to reach Gold or Platinum Elite status—benefits they continue enjoying during personal travel long after their government assignment ends.

How Marriott Bonvoy Points Are Earned

The number of Marriott Bonvoy® points you earn depends on the hotel brand where you stay.

Most Marriott Brands

You earn:

10 Marriott Bonvoy points per eligible U.S. dollar spent at most Marriott hotels

Examples include:

  • Sheraton
  • Courtyard
  • Fairfield Inn & Suites
  • SpringHill Suites

Extended stay Brands earn at a lower rate:

5 Marriott Bonvoy points per eligible U.S. dollar spent

These include:

  • TownePlace Suites
  • Residence Inn
  • Element

Because these hotels are designed for longer stays and already offer amenities such as kitchens and larger suites, Marriott awards points at half the standard rate.

When does Marriott status expire?

Once you earn Marriott Bonvoy elite status, it is valid for the rest of the calendar year in which you earned it and an additional 14 months after that.

For example, if you earned status anytime in 2026, you’d enjoy benefits through the rest of this year, all of 2027 and the first two months of 2028. Your status beyond that period will be based on your qualifying activity during the 2027 calendar year.

Why Platinum Elite Is the Sweet Spot

For many travelers, Platinum Elite is where Marriott Bonvoy becomes truly rewarding.

Benefits may include:

  • Complimentary breakfast at many Marriott brands
  • Executive Lounge access (where available)
  • Guaranteed 4:00 PM late checkout at many hotels
  • Enhanced room upgrades, including select suites
  • 50% bonus points earning bonus on eligible purchases
  • Welcome gifts (varies by brand but often includes points, free breakfast or an amenity)
  • Priority customer service
  • Fifth Night free on award stays – included with all member levels, but you earn points faster with platinum
  • Annual Choice Benefits after reaching qualifying milestones – options include five elite night credits, five Nightly Upgrade Awards, $1,000 off a mattress, a $100 charitable donation and gifting Silver Elite status to another member.

For travelers spending weeks or months on government assignments, these benefits can significantly improve every stay.

M Club® and Club Lounges

One of the biggest advantages of reaching Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite (and higher) is access to M Club® lounges and other executive lounges at participating hotels.

When available, these lounges often include:

  • ☕ Complimentary hot breakfast
  • 🥤 Soft drinks, coffee, and refreshments throughout the day
  • 🍷 Evening beverages (alcoholic beverages may be complimentary or available for purchase, depending on the hotel and local regulations)
  • 🧀 Evening hors d’oeuvres and light snacks

Not every Marriott brand or property has an M Club or executive lounge, but when available, it can significantly enhance your stay.

Why This Matters for Government Travelers

Imagine you’re on a 45-night TDY assignment.

If you earn Platinum Elite early in your trip through Marriott’s Elite Status Challenge, you may enjoy lounge access and complimentary breakfast for the remainder of your stay at participating full-service Marriott hotels. That can add meaningful value over the course of a long assignment while making your travel more comfortable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Marriott Bonvoy Free?

Yes. Membership is completely free.

Will I earn Marriott Bonvoy points when booking through Per Diem Lodging?

Yes. Because Per Diem Lodging books directly with participating Marriott hotels, eligible stays earn Marriott Bonvoy points and Elite Night Credits. Always provide your Marriott Bonvoy membership number before check-in. Eligibility ultimately depends on Marriott’s program rules, the participating hotel, and the qualifying rate booked.

How much are Marriott Bonvoy points worth?

Most travel experts value Marriott Bonvoy points at approximately 0.8 cents per point, although actual value depends on the property, season, and redemption method. However, since Marriott uses dynamic pricing, so you may get more (or less) value.

Can I pool or transfer Marriott points?

Yes. While Marriott doesn’t have a formal “family pooling” feature like Hilton Honors, it does make it very easy to transfer points between members for free, which effectively lets families or friends combine points for an award stay. In order to transfer points both accounts need a minimum of 30 days of qualifying activity and you transfer in increments of 1,000 points (not to exceed 100,000 points per calendar year).

Can I buy Marriott Bonvoy points?

Yes, you can but with Marriott Bonvoy points being valued at approximately 0.8 cents per point we do not recommend it. There are some periodic promotions that allow you to receive double points but even then we suggest you only buy points when you want book a high-value redemption.

Do Marriott Bonvoy points expire?

Bonvoy points expire after 24 months of inactivity, and not all activities (like transferring points) reset expiration. You can keep your points active by having any qualifying account activity at least once every 24 months, such as earning or transferring qualifying airline miles/points through participating partners, earning points from an eligible hotel stay, redeeming Marriott Bonvoy points or buying points. If your account has no qualifying activity for 24 months, all accumulated points are forfeited.
